You need to be loyal to your purpose
Companies and people that achieve long term success are ones that have a vision and purpose as to why they exist.
We often look towards them for inspiration but can never quite figure out how they do it.
The answer to this conundrum is simple — they are loyal to their purpose.
We all get sidetracked in life at some point or another — persuaded by the money, the promises of grandeur, the glitz and glamor, and false images of success. Some of us follow the pathways of others, chasing after dreams that actually belong to others. The thing with personal success is that it’s not marked by the amount of money you gain through your activities. Rather, success is defined by your sense of internal happiness and fulfillment. These two things are only achievable if you are loyal to your purpose.
Being loyal to your purpose means you’ve reached a level of self-awareness. Many of us walk through life without actually being aware of our own personal desires, wants, needs, and things that just make us deeply happy and content with ourselves. I’m not talking about the fleeting instant gratification we consume. I’m talking about the things that we do that makes us happy — the thing that motivates us into a routine of constant creation and production with minimal friction. Our personal purpose is the driving force behind our sense of reality, our existence, and why we do the things we do.
Unhappiness is the result of having too many unnecessary frictions in your life. Sometimes, that friction is necessary. Walking up a learning curve is a type of positive friction. Staying in a workplace or environment that no longer nourishes you as a person is negative friction. To be self-aware, you need to be aware of your frictions as much as the things that make you happy.
Companies and businesses that thrive are ones that have a vision. They have a clear reason for existing beyond the profits. Profit is a by-product of their vision and is often used as a distractionary metric. They stick to what matters to them and communicate it both internally and externally. It’s not about what everyone else thinks about them. It’s not about finding a niche. It’s about creating their own space to exist in. It gives them substance. It gives them brand strength. It gives them a wholesome image of what they are and why they exist.
Sometimes, our purpose becomes stunted because of the environment we’re in. Sometimes, it’s because of the environment we’ve created based on a series of decisions and events. Whatever the case, there is always a certain degree of control and what you can personally do to create change. If you feel stuck, there is always an alternative.
Tunnel vision is a problem we all face. We often think that there’s no alternative — but there is always an alternative. We are just are too afraid to entertain the idea of the possibilities. We only think about the worst-case scenario outcomes for these things. What we really need to do is stop and decide if we can live with the worst-case outcome or the outcome of not doing anything at all. When you do nothing, you remain on the same pathway. When you do something, you give yourself the opportunity of a different outcome.
In the business world, they call it MVP. They test. They try. They trial. They pitch. They do all the little things that add up their knowledge base, skills, and business gut feelings in order to push themselves down a trajectory that’s more aligned with what they want to achieve.
When we are loyal to our purpose, we are focused on the things we produce. We disregard the external world by doing our own things. The world will always have an opinion about who you are, what you are, how you should do things, and what you should do. But the world is not the one living your reality. So stand for something.
